The mace symbolizes the authoity of the uni- tersig and the chain of ofJrce designates the presidentialleadership of the academy. The Wilhes Unitersity mace and presidential chain oJ offtce were giJts oJ local donors and were Jirst used in 1970 at the inauguration of the second president oJ Wilhes. They were designed by Ottie Hill Chwaleh '61 and executed by l{urt Matzdorf , a nationally recognized gold and silversmith Jrom the State untuersity of New Yorh at New Paltz. TheUniversity Mace The sterling silver mace has a gllthnob at its base and a gllt circle at the top beaing the inscnption "Wilhes College 1933." The bowl, nsing above the neck oJ the mace, signi-Wilkes-Barre's t'ies role as a melting pot, t'orming a new and vigorous community of people from many different bachgrounds. This theme is reiterated in the inscrtption of the Unittersity's motto "Unity Amidst Diversig" which surrounds the upper part of the bowl. The glltflame symbolizes the enlightenment gainedfromhigher education, while the piece of anthracite coal set in the center of the flame commemorates the ongin of the IJniversity in a community hnownJor its coal miningpast.
