"It will take at least two rehearsals before the players begin to be
accustomed to the general sonoric fabric of this piece and to how what
they are playing fits into it and contributes to it. The first two or three
rehearsals will sound as if far too much is going on: they will also, in all
probability, be too loud because of the players' unfamiliarity with the
nature and sound of the piece and their self-consciousness both at having
to choose much of what they play and at having to make sounds that
seem unusual. Soon, however, the players should begin to sense the fact
that anything they play must be played with care, with thought, ideally
with sensitivity; that choices of pitches, durations, even of which alter
natives are chosen for performance, must be made with a sense of the total
dynamic ensemble freshly felt each moment and a sense of each player's
personal grasp of and feeling for his instrument and its potential; and
that each part, in silence as well as sound, is a vital thread in the total
fabric of the piece. They will, hopefully, discover that chance/choice music
demands as high musicianship as anything else and can generate an ex
citement, a group rapport, and a feeling of creative participation some
times lacking in more "conventional" music.
"The average basic density of sound in the piece is relatively high: its
frequency varies extremely rapidly within a limited amplitude. This has
been done to provide a rich and enormously plastic sound texture, for a
number of reasons: to exploit the immense variety of sound potential in
the concert band which has not even begun to be dealt with in other
works, to present a more immediate appeal than a more thinly scored
piece might, and to carry the players through what the composer hopes
will be an exciting musical experience to a wider appreciation of new
music at every level."

Percy Aldridge Grainger

Lincolnshire Posy (1940)

"This bunch of 'musical wildflowers'. . . is based on
folksongs collected in Lincolnshire, England. . .mainly in
the years 1905-1906. .. and the work is dedicated to the old
folksingers who sang so sweetly to me. Indeed, each number
is intended to be a kind of musical portrait of the singer who
sang its underlying melody-a musical portrait of the singer's
personality no less than of his habits of song-his regular or
irregular wonts of rhythm, his preference for gaunt or
ornately arabesqued delivery, his contrasts of legato and
staccato, his tendency towards breadth or delicacy of tone. 11

SYNOPSIS
As the opera opens, Roseanne is searching
the sea, awaiting The return of her lover. Jeff
has violated the law of the island, which forbids
a man to leave. The punishment is death. Ros®anne knows that he cannot find the freedom he
is looking for by running away from his love or
from his responsibility under the law, and scans
the sea for signs of his boat.
But her belief that neither love nor law
must bind a man, she says, prevented her from
forcing him to stay.
Jeff returns. He eludes Justice Standish's
men who are guarding the shores. Roseanne

and Jeff are reunited, iust as the storm that has
followed him is about to break. Jeff tells her
that on the sea he realized that in her love he
found the strength to free his spirit. It was weakness drove him from her. They go to the Tem-

dish of violating a law they knew was bad but
to which they had conformed. Their words,
"Roseanne is right, the law has been betrayed,"
prophetically underline Roseanne's, ``The law re-

moved, the law retained, Upon your soul the
®vil's stained."

Jeff has paid with his life for the freedom
for which they had been unwilling to sacrifice
their disbelief.

Ce]ia` and the chorus comfort

Roseanne, as Jeff's lifeless body is borne across
the stage, by reminding her
Thai he kissed you
Dearest Rose
Leaving you
ln repose.
He's your man
You must be strong.
For he gave

Your heart a song.

ple of Mercy, nearby, to pray.
Celia, secretly in love with him, hoping to

save his life, tears from the Book of Justice the
law which her father upholds. "Now he can be
free," she says, since her act has removed the
wicked law from the Book. But a law is bad not
because it is on the books but because the evil
stain is on the conscience, and Standish stands
accused under the moral law of the universe.
``lt is you who are guilty!" Roseanne ac-

cuses Standish, after he has sent his men to the
Temple of Mercy to kill Jeff. Standish looks for
consolation from his daughter, but Celia cannot
protect him; from Roseanne, who has shattered
his confidence in the law; from the chorus, who
find courage within themselves to accuse Stan-

recently opened its $1 million science building
as evidence of its belief in I.he spirit of free inquiry. Its plans for the cultural improvement of
the community include an arts building, histor-

ical center, and theater.
MAN AGAINST THE SKY, an original one-

act music drama, was written in recognition of
the creative voice Wilkes College brings fo
Wyoming Valley, which looks to the college
with increasing awareness of its vital and im-

portant contribution to the life of the community
that nourishes its growth.
