OPERA GEMS

"La ci darem la mano"

W. A. Mozart

(from Don Giovanni)
LINDA BURKHART, Soprano
DANIEL EBY, Baritone
To his surprise, Don Giovanni, stumbles upon a peasant wedding taking
place near his castle. He decides to try and allure the pretty young bride away
from her bridegroom. In this duet we see Don Giovanni overcome Zerlina's
prejudice toward the upper classes and convince her of his own desire to take
her to his castle and make her his bride.

"Sulla tomba che rinserra"

G. Donizatti

(from Lucia di Lammermoor)
DEBORAH COOK, Soprano

ALLAN KEENE, Tenor

A mortal feud between their two families keep Lucia and Edgardo from
openly declaring their love for each other. At this point in the opera, Edgardo
must leave for France, but before leaving he renews his vow of vengeance and
then tenderly joins Lucia in their lovely duet of parting.

G

"Dunque io son"
(from II Barbiere di Siviglia)
LINDA BURKHART, Soprano

DANIEL EBY, Baritone

Figaro is commissioned by Count Almaviva to gain entrance into Doctor
Bartolo's house, where Rosina is kept a virtual prisoner, to inform her of the
Count's affection, and to arrange a meeting between the two. In this duet we
see this all taking place and as well witness Figaro's surprise when Rosina pro

duces a note for the Count, already written.

FANTASY HI — ALLEGRO, MOLTO SPIRITOSO

“This work for band is based on a theme from a composition for piano
by Joseph Haydn. The subtly conceived theme, I concluded, offered an
opportunity to fantasize in the musical language of today.

adagio

In the final sense, it is my homage to a composer who will always re
main contemporary.”

Spectzum

“Spectrum was written in the spring of 1966 for the Memorial High
School Band in Houston, Texas ... It is a work for mixed media — pre
recorded tape and live musicians — and is a serial piece in one movement of
about six minutes duration.
Two particular aspects of the piece are thus thrust beyond the tradi
tional: instrumental color (electronic sounds) and harmony (cluster sonor
ities, in part a result of the serialization). To counterbalance the courtship
of the two extremes, I have purposely kept the overall form of the piece
rather straight-forward, namely ABA...

To many, the composition may seem a digression from tradition. To be
sure it is a digression into the untried field of electronics for me, but di
vorced from the compositional tradition it is not Cause and effect, unity
and variety, exposition and development, tension and repose all operate in
Spectrum."

INTERMISSION

(Sheryl Lucker and Shirley Davis, pianos)

The composer was bom in 1919 in Czechoslovakia, studied at Prague
Conservatory of Music, and at the universities of Prague and Fribourg,
Switzerland. He was affiliated with Radio Prague as composer and con
ductor while still a student there. In 1948 he had become active in Swiss
National Radio as composer-conductor. Since 1957 he has lived in New
York, become a U. S. citizen, and is now active as composer, conductor and
lecturer. Since 1964 he has lectured and conducted his music at the invitation
of universities in more than thirty states. His music is alive and energetic,
and Trittico is certainly no exception.

Berceuse

and

Finale from “The Firebird” (1910) .. Igor Stravinsky
(Arranged for band by Richard Franko Goldman)

The three movements are a constantly varied examination of Haydn’s
basic idea.

The bubbling humor of the first and third fantasies flank a second which
is intensely lyric.

—

ALLEGRO MARCATO

“The composition of The Firebird was the beginning of the collaboration
between two great artists (Stravinsky and the great Russian dancer, Serge
Diaghilev) — a collaboration that enhanced the development and prosperity
of Stravinsky and of Diaghilev’s famous Ballet Russe.

The final theme of The Firebird is based on an old Russian folk time
first ‘discovered’ by Rimsky-Korsakov. The song appears here as a thanks
giving hymn, followed by the motif of The Firebird. A rhythmical transformation of the first theme follows and a brief reappearance of The Firebird
motif concludes the work — certainly one of the finest compositions of
our day.”

INTROIT
KYRIE

GLORIA
ALLELUIA

Composed in 1967, this work is a well-written instrumental statement
of four sections of the church liturgy. The Introit is a fanfare, a procla
mation! One can almost hear the words Kyrie Eleison in the second move
ment The Gloria is unbridled joy, and the fugal Alleluia serves as a
stirring Finale!

OVERTURE IN C MAJOR FOR WIND BAND, Op. 24

SYMPHONY NO. 6 FOR BAND (1958)

PRELUDE AND AZTEC DANCE

I.

PROGRAM

(1809-1847)

"The tumbling of the church bells and the bold noise of fireworks at midnight offi
cially announce the opening of the Fiesta. Groups of Mexicans from near and far
slowly descend upon the huge court surrounding the old cathedral; some on foot,
some by burro, and still others on bleeding knees, suffering out of homage to a
past miracle.

Vincent Persichetti

"After a brave effort at gaiety the celebrators settle down on their serapes to a rest
less night until the church bells and fireworks again intrude upon the early quiet
of the Mexican morn.

Felix Mendelssohn

"At mid-day a parade is announced by the blatant blare of trumpets. A band is
heard in the distance and almost immediately the musicians round the corner of
the plaza. The attention is focused upon the Aztec Dancers, brilliantly plumed and
masked, who dance in ever-increasing frenzy to a dramatic climax.

II.

BADINAGE FOR PERCUSSION AND BAND (1969)

"The tolling of the bells is now a reminder that the Fiesta is, after all, a religious
celebration. The rich and poor slowly gather within the walls of the old cathedral
for contemplation and worship.

Rosendo E. Santos, Jr.

CARNIVAL

III.

"Mexico is at its best on the days of the Fiesta —a day on which passion governs the
love, hate and joy of the Mestizo and the Indio. There is entertainment for both
young and old —the itinerant circus, the market, the bull fight, the town band, and
always the 'cantinas' with their band of 'Mariachis' —on the day of days: FIESTA."

ENGLISH DANCES FOR BAND (1965)

LA FIESTA M EX 1 CANA, A Mexican Folk Symphony
for Concert Band (1954)

1.

H. Owen Reed

"The Mexican, as a result of his religious heritage, feels an inner desire to express
love and honor for his Virgin. The Mexican 'Fiesta,' which is an integral part of this social

structure, is a study in contrasts: it is both serious and comical, festive and solemn, de
vout and pagan, boisterous and tender.

Malcolm Arnold

3.

4.

Allegro risoluto

"LA FIESTA MEXICANA, which attempts to portray musically one of these 'Fiestas/ is
divided into three movements. These movements, plus possible choreographic notes,
are described below.

"It will take at least two rehearsals before the players begin to be
accustomed to the general sonoric fabric of this piece and to how what
they are playing fits into it and contributes to it. The first two or three
rehearsals will sound as if far too much is going on: they will also, in all
probability, be too loud because of the players' unfamiliarity with the
nature and sound of the piece and their self-consciousness both at having
to choose much of what they play and at having to make sounds that
seem unusual. Soon, however, the players should begin to sense the fact
that anything they play must be played with care, with thought, ideally
with sensitivity; that choices of pitches, durations, even of which alter
natives are chosen for performance, must be made with a sense of the total
dynamic ensemble freshly felt each moment and a sense of each player's
personal grasp of and feeling for his instrument and its potential; and
that each part, in silence as well as sound, is a vital thread in the total
fabric of the piece. They will, hopefully, discover that chance/choice music
demands as high musicianship as anything else and can generate an ex
citement, a group rapport, and a feeling of creative participation some
times lacking in more "conventional" music.
"The average basic density of sound in the piece is relatively high: its
frequency varies extremely rapidly within a limited amplitude. This has
been done to provide a rich and enormously plastic sound texture, for a
number of reasons: to exploit the immense variety of sound potential in
the concert band which has not even begun to be dealt with in other
works, to present a more immediate appeal than a more thinly scored
piece might, and to carry the players through what the composer hopes
will be an exciting musical experience to a wider appreciation of new
music at every level."
