Arrasy Wawelskie Miniatury

Dublin Core

Description

This book series, Arrasy Wawelskie Miniatury, features woven reproductions of the Jagiellonian Tapestries, a distinguished collection that the Jagiellonian kings commissioned in the 16th century. Artisans produced the original tapestries between 1526 and 1565. Although the collection originally numbered in the hundreds, only 136 pieces survive today, as centuries of conflict scattered or destroyed the remainder of the collection. Krakow produced these specific miniature volumes in 1969, displaying two distinct series from the original work: one illustrates a biblical story and the other portrays a mythological scene. While the exact date of donation remains unknown, a member of the Polish Room Committee likely donated them to the collection. In terms of the Polish Room, these books serve as a lasting tribute to the region's artistic heritage.
