Charles Edison (1890-1969) was an American politician and served as Assistant secretary before being promoted to United States Secretary of the Navy. Born in West Orange, New Jersey on August 3, 1890, Edison graduated from Hotchkiss School in 1909 . Before enlisting with the Army, Edison would operate a small theater, called the "Little Thimble Theater" with Guido Bruno. In January of 1937, Roosevelt appointed Edison Assistant Secretary of the Navy, then as Secretary on January 2, 1940 when the previous man, Claude A. Swanson died suddenly. Edison would hold the position until he resigned after winning the Governor’s race of New Jersey.
