Lewis Compton
Lewis Compton (1892-1942) was an officer of the United States Navy during World War I. Born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Compton would enroll in the United States Naval Reserve on March 22, 1917. Compton would return to the Reserve I after serving active duty in World War I, where he would remain training until his retirement in July of 1932. Compton would use his public service career to inform his work as a special assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy before succeeding him on February 9, 1940. He served in that position until February 13, 1941. The USS Compton was named after him.
