Robert Carlisle Giffen (1886-1962) was an admiral of the United States. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on June 29, 1886, Giffen would attend the University of Notre Dame before his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, Nebraska, in 1903. During World War I, Giffen would act as Lieutenant Commander of different destroyers, such as the USS Trippe, Schley, Huron, and Neches. He was restationed at the Naval Academy in 1934-1937. In March 1941, Giffen would be appointed Rear Admiral, and become a commanding officer of a cruiser division. He would lead the North Atlantic Neutrality Patrol, and would take command of surface forces following the United States’ official involvement during World War II.
